LeArt at LePeep
Brickton
Art
Center is exhibiting artwork on the walls of LePeep Restaurant (100
S. Euclid ). LePeep manager, Paulette Cocozza, originally approached
Brickton
Art
Center with the idea last Fall. We normally have artwork on the walls here but I thought it would be a nice change to highlight artwork that is being created in our community.
The current exhibit features work created by participants of two of Brickton s art outreach programs: Have Dreams and Avenues to
Independence . The artwork for Have Dreams, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the opportunities and quality of life for people with autism, was originally created for the National Autism Awareness month exhibit at Brickton. Dana LaBrose, Program Coordinator at Have Dreams says, Brickton s art outreach program has allowed many of our students an invaluable opportunity to participate in an instructional group art lesson that is tailored to their ability level.
Brickton also conducts a weekly art program for residents of Avenues to
Independence , a non-profit organization serving adults with developmental disabilities. "The Creative Expressions class has provided an opportunity for our persons served to investigate (and participate in) the artistic process. Through this experience we are discovering that they have an unlimited enthusiasm for the visual arts and a hunger to create. We are appreciative of the relationship we have developed with the
Brickton
Art
Center and are excited to further nurture and develop the artistic talents of our persons served, states Christopher Bellus, Case Manager at Avenues.
Chuck Lindquist, owner of the Frame Gallery of Park Ridge (157 N. Northwest Hwy.), provided free matting and at-cost framing of the artwork. Carolyn Lewis, art therapist and Program Coordinator at Brickton, explains the positive benefits of exhibiting artwork in a public venue such as LePeep. Framing artwork and putting it on the walls to be admired and celebrated can have life-altering effects on the artist, it will build confidence and allow these individuals an opportunity to use their artistic talents to contribute to the community.
